George S. Thompson, a 30-year veteran member of the BRSO bass section, brings a wealth of experience and talent to our orchestra. He studied double bass with notable mentors from the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Philadelphia Music Academy, LSU, and jazz performance with Alvin Batiste. George has played with numerous regional orchestras across the central south, including in Jackson, New Orleans, and Shreveport. Beyond classical music, George has toured with various jazz, church, and popular music groups across the US and Europe. With advanced degrees in Educational Technology, he taught music and computer science at the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired, and has published over 50 articles on educational technology and computer use by the visually impaired. George has also composed and arranged music, and conducted the East Baton Rouge Parish Schools Honors Orchestra in his own arrangements and compositions.
