oleksii Hamov

Dr. Oleksii Hamov was born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, and began studying violin at age seven. He has performed with the Chernivtsi Regional Philharmonic since 2007. That same year he won First Prize as a soloist at the International Competition of Young Performers "21st Century Art" in Kyiv. He then accepted an invitation from violinist Yakov Voldman, a fellow Chernivtsi native, to continue his studies in Louisiana.

That invitation turned into a long American chapter. He earned a Master of Music from Southeastern Louisiana University, an Artist Diploma from the University of Tennessee, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His dissertation was the first study in Ukrainian musicology of the violin sonatas of Naum Lapynsky and Mykola Silvansky. He won concerto competitions at both Tennessee and UNLV, and later taught as Lecturer in Strings at Colorado State University Pueblo.

Now based in Miami, Dr. Hamov performs with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra and the South Florida Symphony Orchestra.
